Seismo-at-School in Nepal

International Workshop in Pokhara

We have successfully organised the 5th International Workshop on Educational Seismology on 23-24 April in  Pokhara, Nepal, sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research (ICRM), University of Lausanne, Switzerland. The event brought together national and international scientists, educators, and school teachers to strengthen earthquake education and awareness through classroom-based seismology.

A total of 40 participants, primarily school teachers from across Nepal, took part in this engaging and interactive workshop. Key topics included:

  • The physics of earthquakes and seismic wave propagation
  • Earthquake location using the triangulation method
  • Application of seismometers in school environments for real-time seismic learning
  • A focused session on the Myanmar earthquake and its regional implications
  • An Earthquake Learning Exhibition, featuring demonstrations and educational resources

The workshop featured presentations by distinguished experts, including:

  • Prof. Dr. Bishal Nath Upreti – Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)
  • Prof. Dr. György Hetényi – University of Lausanne, Switzerland
  • Dr. Lauriane Chardot – Earth Observatory of Singapore
  • Nadja Valenzuela – ETH Zurich, Switzerland
  • Dr. Lok Bijaya Adhikari – National Earthquake Research and Monitoring Centre (NERMC), Nepal
  • Dr. Mukunda Bhattarai – National Earthquake Research and Monitoring Centre (NERMC), Nepal
  • Dr. Shiba Subedi – Seismologist, NAST, SASIN

The workshop aimed to empower teachers with scientific knowledge and practical tools to enhance classroom learning and foster a culture of earthquake preparedness. Through cross-border collaboration and local engagement, the initiative continues to build a resilient and seismically informed education community in Nepal.
